Flat batteries in Barnet
Where cars go flat here, and how we reach them.
Barnet is driveway London: most cars sit on a drive in Finchley, Totteridge or Mill Hill and are used for short school and shop runs that never charge the battery properly. The M1 and A1 junctions around Hendon and Apex Corner are the borough's breakdown hotspots. Brent Cross, just off the A406 at the Brent Cross Interchange, has more than 8,000 free spaces between its 3,930-space multi-storey and the Fenwick and John Lewis car parks, so a flat battery there needs a level and a store entrance rather than a postcode. Along the Northern line, the TfL station car parks at High Barnet, Totteridge & Whetstone, Woodside Park, Finchley Central, East Finchley and Mill Hill East fill with commuter cars that stand all day, and New Barnet's 109-space station car park does the same on the Great Northern side.

Barnet questions
Before you call.
Do you cover the M1 and A1 through Barnet?
Yes. Before anything else, get behind the barrier or into an emergency refuge and ring 999 if you are in a live lane. Then tell us which road, which direction and the last junction you passed, for instance M1 southbound after junction 2 or A1 northbound past Apex Corner, and whether you are on the main carriageway or a slip road; a postcode places nobody on either road and the junctions look alike from the hard shoulder. Barnet's junctions are among the busiest breakdown spots in north London because the M1 starts here and the A1 and A41 feed it, so the technician will often come at you from the next junction and double back. There is nothing added to the price for a trunk road, a motorway or the time of night.
Can you reach Edgware and Mill Hill at night?
Yes, and the price is the same at 2am as at 2pm. Edgware and Mill Hill sit along the A41 Watford Way and the A1 Barnet Bypass, which stay fast once the evening traffic has gone, and Mill Hill East and Colindale both have TfL station car parks that are easy to find in the dark. The residential streets off the main roads are wide by London standards but fully parked overnight, so the technician stops legally nearby and carries the pack to the car. NW7 covers a lot of ground, so give us the street and the nearest junction rather than the postcode alone, and if the car is on a drive behind a closed gate say so, because the technician can work from the pavement side with the bonnet open if you would rather not open up.
Which Barnet station car parks do you cover?
All of them. The Northern line has TfL station car parks, run by Saba, at High Barnet, Totteridge & Whetstone, Woodside Park, Finchley Central, East Finchley and Mill Hill East, with more at Colindale and Brent Cross stations, and New Barnet railway station has its own 109-space car park. They are open-air, so there is no barrier or height limit for the technician to think about, but they empty out fast after the evening peak and a car left in the far corner is easy to miss in the dark. Give us the station name, the entrance you drove in through and roughly where you are parked, then wait by the car with your phone on so the technician can find you first time.
Can you come to Barnet Hospital on Wellhouse Lane?
Yes. Barnet Hospital is on Wellhouse Lane, EN5 3DJ, and we attend its patient and visitor car parks in the same way as any other car park. Tell us which car park you are in and, if you can, the entrance you used and the nearest building or department, so the technician is not walking the site looking for you. Hospital car parks are a classic place for a battery to give up: the car is left in a hurry with the lights or hazard flashers on and then sits for hours. If that is what happened, say so when you call, because it tells the technician the battery was probably fine that morning and most likely needs a jump rather than a replacement.
How quickly can you reach me in London?
Across the 33 boroughs we arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of your call on average, and faster inside the North and South Circular. We give you a realistic time when you book rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you straight away if it will be longer. The hour makes no difference to the cover: we run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and bank holidays, so a three in the morning callout is handled exactly like a midday one. Traffic is the main variable, particularly the A406 North Circular, the A205 South Circular and the river crossings. If you are somewhere with restricted access, such as an airport car park, a gated development or an underground residents' bay, say so when you call so we reach you first time.
How much does a jump start cost?
A car jump start starts at £49, a van at £65, and a hybrid or EV 12V boost at £59. The price is confirmed before we set off and it does not change at night, at weekends, on bank holidays or inside the ULEZ and congestion charge zones. There is no call-out fee stacked on top and no mileage charge across the 33 boroughs. A battery health test starts at £25 on its own and is free with any jump start, and a new battery is from £95 fitted. You pay when the job is done, by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If we cannot start the car, we tell you why and you pay the callout only.
Do I need a membership?
No. Jump Start London is pay-as-you-go, so there is no membership, no annual fee, no joining cost and no sign-up before you can call. That is the main difference between us and a breakdown club: you are not paying a subscription all year for something you may use once. Call when you need us, get the price confirmed before we set off, and pay only for that job by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay when it is finished. There is no contract afterwards and nothing to cancel. If you already belong to a breakdown club you are still free to call us when their wait is longer than ours.
Can you get to a car in an underground or barrier car park?
Yes. Most London jump starts happen in car parks rather than on driveways, and a great many are underground residents' bays where nothing can get alongside you. Our technicians carry a compact lithium jump pack to the car on foot, so there is no need to bring a second vehicle in and no need for the bay next to you to be free. That is the practical reason a pack beats jump leads down there. Two things help before you go below ground. Agree the price and the time while you still have signal, and tell the concierge or car park office a technician is coming so they can point them to your level. Height barriers are not an obstacle.
