Flat batteries in Bromley
Where cars go flat here, and how we reach them.
Bromley is the largest borough by area and most of it is driveways, garages and second cars, which is why the first frost of the year fills our phone with Chislehurst, Petts Wood and West Wickham callouts. In Bromley town centre The Glades car park issues a ticket at the gate and allows no overnight parking, the council's The Hill multi-storey on Beckenham Lane holds 340 cars with a 6ft 6in height limit and lifts that are currently out of order, and St Mark's Square is an underground APCOA car park with 220 spaces open around the clock. Orpington station's multi-storey has 387 spaces and Bromley North's 213, and the Princess Royal University Hospital's car park is entered straight off the A21 at Farnborough Common. Beckenham and Penge have terraced permit streets, and the A21, which runs as Bromley Hill, Kentish Way, Masons Hill and Farnborough Way down to the M25 at junction 4, is where breakdowns on the move happen. Biggin Hill is covered too.

Bromley questions
Before you call.
Do you cover Orpington, Biggin Hill and the M25 edge?
Yes, all of BR6 and the Biggin Hill valley to the M25 at junction 4, with nothing added for the distance. The A21 is the spine: it runs as Bromley Hill, London Road, Tweedy Road, Kentish Way, Masons Hill, Bromley Common, Farnborough Common, Farnborough Way and Sevenoaks Road on its way to the motorway, and the A233 reaches Biggin Hill by Westerham Road, Main Road and Leaves Green Road. Tell us which of those named stretches you are on rather than just the road number, because the A21 changes name every mile. The valley roads are unlit and genuinely rural in places, so after dark keep the doors locked, put the hazard lights on and give us the nearest turning or pub name. Biggin Hill Airport itself has no public car park, so a car there is usually at a hotel or on the road outside.
Can you attend The Glades car park in Bromley?
Yes, and the thing to know about The Glades is the clock. The car park on the High Street, BR1 1DN, issues a ticket at the entrance gate, opens 7am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 7pm on Sunday with last entry an hour before closing, and does not allow overnight parking, so a car that will not start at half past eight on a Saturday has to be running before the gates shut. Call the moment it fails rather than after a few more tries, give us the level and the nearest store entrance, and stay with the car; the technician walks in with the pack if the entrance queue is slow. The streets around the centre are the Bromley Town Centre controlled zone, with inner and outer permit areas A, B and C, so if you are on-street say which.
Can you get into The Hill multi-storey and the St Mark's Square underground car park?
Yes, both, and they are opposite kinds of car park. The Hill on Beckenham Lane, BR2 0DA, is the council's 340-space multi-storey with a 1.98 metre height limit, paid through RingGo, open 7.30am to 6.29pm with an evening tariff after; its lifts are currently out of order, so tell us the floor. St Mark's Square is an underground APCOA car park with 220 spaces open 24 hours, so a late callout there is straightforward, but phone signal fades below ground, so settle the price and the arrival time with us before you go down, and tell us the nearest stairwell or pedestrian exit; the technician comes in on foot with the pack. Bromley South station is a few minutes' walk from both if you would rather wait somewhere lit.
Do you cover Orpington station car park and the Princess Royal University Hospital?
Yes. Orpington station's car park on Station Approach, BR6 0SX, is an APCOA multi-storey with 387 spaces, a 2.10 metre height limit and ANPR cameras, open to drive in and out 24 hours, and APCOA also runs the Bromley North (213 spaces), Elmstead Woods (103), Shortlands (33) and Bickley (25) station car parks on the same round-the-clock basis. The Princess Royal University Hospital on Farnborough Common, BR6 8ND, has pay-and-display visitor parking with its car park entrance directly off the A21, and the trust points overflow to the nearby Sainsbury's car park, so say which of the two you are in. Give us the level or the nearest entrance, stay with the car and keep your phone on; the technician walks the pack in from the nearest legal stop if the entrance is queued.
How quickly can you reach me in London?
Across the 33 boroughs we arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of your call on average, and faster inside the North and South Circular. We give you a realistic time when you book rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you straight away if it will be longer. The hour makes no difference to the cover: we run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and bank holidays, so a three in the morning callout is handled exactly like a midday one. Traffic is the main variable, particularly the A406 North Circular, the A205 South Circular and the river crossings. If you are somewhere with restricted access, such as an airport car park, a gated development or an underground residents' bay, say so when you call so we reach you first time.
How much does a jump start cost?
A car jump start starts at £49, a van at £65, and a hybrid or EV 12V boost at £59. The price is confirmed before we set off and it does not change at night, at weekends, on bank holidays or inside the ULEZ and congestion charge zones. There is no call-out fee stacked on top and no mileage charge across the 33 boroughs. A battery health test starts at £25 on its own and is free with any jump start, and a new battery is from £95 fitted. You pay when the job is done, by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If we cannot start the car, we tell you why and you pay the callout only.
Do I need a membership?
No. Jump Start London is pay-as-you-go, so there is no membership, no annual fee, no joining cost and no sign-up before you can call. That is the main difference between us and a breakdown club: you are not paying a subscription all year for something you may use once. Call when you need us, get the price confirmed before we set off, and pay only for that job by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay when it is finished. There is no contract afterwards and nothing to cancel. If you already belong to a breakdown club you are still free to call us when their wait is longer than ours.
Can you get to a car in an underground or barrier car park?
Yes. Most London jump starts happen in car parks rather than on driveways, and a great many are underground residents' bays where nothing can get alongside you. Our technicians carry a compact lithium jump pack to the car on foot, so there is no need to bring a second vehicle in and no need for the bay next to you to be free. That is the practical reason a pack beats jump leads down there. Two things help before you go below ground. Agree the price and the time while you still have signal, and tell the concierge or car park office a technician is coming so they can point them to your level. Height barriers are not an obstacle.
