Flat batteries in Havering
Where cars go flat here, and how we reach them.
Havering is the most car-dependent borough in London, with long driveways in Emerson Park and Upminster and cars used for every trip, most of them short. Romford's town-centre car parks are busy callouts: The Liberty has an 800-space ANPR multi-storey open 24 hours, the council's Angel Way multi-storey holds 320 cars on weekdays and 480 at weekends with a six-foot height limit, and Como Street is a 134-space surface car park with no height restriction at all. Romford station has no car park, but Upminster has 498 spaces and the TfL station car parks at Gidea Park, Harold Wood and Hornchurch fill with commuters. Queen's Hospital on Rom Valley Way has an ANPR multi-storey with entry barriers. The M25 between junctions 28 and 29, the A12 and the A127, which meet at Gallows Corner, are where drivers break down on the move.

Havering questions
Before you call.
Do you cover Romford at night and on weekends?
Yes, at the same price as a weekday afternoon. Romford station has no car park of its own, so late-night cars are in the town centre multi-storeys or on the streets around South Street and the market, and the Liberty's ANPR car park is open right through the night while Angel Way is not. Give us the car park or the street and the level, and on a Saturday night tell us which side of the ring road you are on, because the one-way system around the town centre adds minutes if the technician comes in from the wrong arm. Out at the stations, Gidea Park, Harold Wood and Hornchurch all have TfL car parks run by Saba and Upminster's has 498 spaces; they are open-air, so just say where in the car park you are.
Can you reach Upminster, Cranham and the M25 junctions 28 and 29?
Yes. Every RM postcode is covered out to the M25, including Upminster, Cranham, Harold Wood and the villages between junctions 28 and 29, and nothing is added to the price for the mileage or the hour. The A127 and the A12 are the two roads that get the technician out that way, meeting at Gallows Corner, so if you are anywhere near the junction say which arm you are on. On the M25 itself, get behind the barrier first, ring 999 if you are in a live lane, and then give us the direction and whether you are between 28 and 29 or beyond. On an unlit lane towards the motorway after dark, keep the doors locked and the hazard lights on and tell us the nearest turning or farm name.
Which Romford car parks can you get into?
All of the main ones. The Liberty shopping centre car park on Western Road is an 800-space ANPR multi-storey open 24 hours a day, with 32 disabled bays on the ground level. The council's Angel Way multi-storey on Angel Way, RM1 1JH, has 320 spaces on weekdays and 480 at weekends and a six-foot height limit at the entrance, and Como Street, RM7 7DL, is a 134-space surface car park with no height restriction. Our technicians attend in a car with the jump pack in the boot, so the height barriers make no difference to us. Tell us the car park name and the level, and in the multi-storeys agree the price and time before you go back down, because signal fades on the lower floors.
Can you come to Queen's Hospital in Romford?
Yes. Queen's Hospital is on Rom Valley Way and its multi-storey car park is ANPR-controlled with entry barriers; visitors use the ground and first floors and part of the second, pay at the machines between the main entrance and the car park, and blue-badge holders use the free car park at the front. A car left there through a long visit with the lights or the hazard flashers on is one of the most common flat batteries we see in Havering. When you call, tell us which floor you are on and which lift lobby is nearest, and if you are in the blue-badge car park at the front say so, because it is a separate area. The technician walks the pack to the car, so there is nothing to arrange with the barrier.
How quickly can you reach me in London?
Across the 33 boroughs we arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of your call on average, and faster inside the North and South Circular. We give you a realistic time when you book rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you straight away if it will be longer. The hour makes no difference to the cover: we run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and bank holidays, so a three in the morning callout is handled exactly like a midday one. Traffic is the main variable, particularly the A406 North Circular, the A205 South Circular and the river crossings. If you are somewhere with restricted access, such as an airport car park, a gated development or an underground residents' bay, say so when you call so we reach you first time.
How much does a jump start cost?
A car jump start starts at £49, a van at £65, and a hybrid or EV 12V boost at £59. The price is confirmed before we set off and it does not change at night, at weekends, on bank holidays or inside the ULEZ and congestion charge zones. There is no call-out fee stacked on top and no mileage charge across the 33 boroughs. A battery health test starts at £25 on its own and is free with any jump start, and a new battery is from £95 fitted. You pay when the job is done, by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If we cannot start the car, we tell you why and you pay the callout only.
Do I need a membership?
No. Jump Start London is pay-as-you-go, so there is no membership, no annual fee, no joining cost and no sign-up before you can call. That is the main difference between us and a breakdown club: you are not paying a subscription all year for something you may use once. Call when you need us, get the price confirmed before we set off, and pay only for that job by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay when it is finished. There is no contract afterwards and nothing to cancel. If you already belong to a breakdown club you are still free to call us when their wait is longer than ours.
Can you get to a car in an underground or barrier car park?
Yes. Most London jump starts happen in car parks rather than on driveways, and a great many are underground residents' bays where nothing can get alongside you. Our technicians carry a compact lithium jump pack to the car on foot, so there is no need to bring a second vehicle in and no need for the bay next to you to be free. That is the practical reason a pack beats jump leads down there. Two things help before you go below ground. Agree the price and the time while you still have signal, and tell the concierge or car park office a technician is coming so they can point them to your level. Height barriers are not an obstacle.
