Flat batteries in Islington

Where cars go flat here, and how we reach them.

Islington has one of the highest shares of permit-only parking in London and very few driveways: every street in the borough sits in a controlled parking zone, most of them running 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays, with zones C and K controlled around the clock. So most cars live on the street in Highbury, Canonbury and Barnsbury and go a week or more without being driven, and the low-traffic neighbourhood filters make short trips even shorter, so batteries never get a full charge. There is almost nowhere else to put a car: Angel Central's car park has just 27 spaces, reached from Berners Road beside the Business Design Centre, and the Whittington Hospital on Highgate Hill has no visitor car park at all, only a few blue-badge bays and pay-and-display on the surrounding roads. We also cover the Emirates Stadium event streets and the Archway gyratory, and Clerkenwell and Finsbury south of Pentonville Road and City Road sit inside the congestion charge zone.

Before you call: If your street is inside a low-traffic neighbourhood, tell us which end is open to traffic. It saves the technician a loop around the filters. On an Arsenal day, tell us the zone letter on the nearest sign; the event-day controls run until 8.30pm on weekday matches.

Islington questions

Before you call.

Do you come out on Arsenal match days?

Yes. The roads around Highbury close for a few hours before and after kick-off, so the detail that matters is where you are and which side of the ground, not the postcode. Give us the street and we route the technician to the nearest open side and walk the pack in from there. Approaching from the wrong direction on a match day can add twenty minutes for no reason. The A1 Holloway Road and A503 Seven Sisters Road are the usual approaches. Cover runs 24 hours a day, so a car that will not start after an evening fixture is treated exactly like one at midday.

Can you jump start a car in the Angel or Old Street car parks?

Yes. The Business Design Centre car park and the Old Street and Clerkenwell NCPs are all covered, along with the residents' bays and underground parking across N1 and EC1. Multi-storey and underground car parks in this area tend to share postcodes with the buildings above them, so give us the car park name and the level rather than the postcode alone. Agree the price before you head below ground, since signal drops down there and it saves a second call. The A501 City Road and A1 Upper Street are our routes in, and the area is usually 30 to 45 minutes.

Which Islington parking zones change on an Arsenal match day?

Zones E, F, G, H, J, L, N, Q and V. On home match and event days the council adds extra controls in those zones: 6.30pm to 8.30pm on weekdays, with zone G starting at 2pm; 1.30pm to 4.30pm on Saturdays, with zones G and Q starting at noon; and noon to 4.30pm on Sundays and bank holidays. If your car has died on one of those streets, tell us the zone letter from the nearest sign, the street and the house number, and whether you are in a permit bay, because for an hour after the final whistle the crowds leaving on foot slow everything from Highbury Corner to Finsbury Park. Our technician stops beside the car for the few minutes the jump takes and walks the pack in from the nearest open street if the road is choked.

Can you come to the Whittington Hospital or Angel Central if there is no car park?

Yes, because in both cases the car will be on a street nearby and that is where we meet you. The Whittington on Highgate Hill, N19 5NF, has no visitor car park, only a limited number of blue-badge bays and pay-and-display on the surrounding roads, so visitors' cars end up on the Archway and Highgate Hill side streets, several of them steep; tell us the road, the house number and whether the car is facing uphill so the technician can chock it before connecting. Angel Central's car park at 21 Parkfield Street has 27 spaces, entered from Berners Road beside the Business Design Centre, and opens until 12.30am, or 2.30am on Fridays and Saturdays, so a late callout there is fine; say which floor and the technician comes in on foot with the pack.

How quickly can you reach me in London?

Across the 33 boroughs we arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of your call on average, and faster inside the North and South Circular. We give you a realistic time when you book rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you straight away if it will be longer. The hour makes no difference to the cover: we run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and bank holidays, so a three in the morning callout is handled exactly like a midday one. Traffic is the main variable, particularly the A406 North Circular, the A205 South Circular and the river crossings. If you are somewhere with restricted access, such as an airport car park, a gated development or an underground residents' bay, say so when you call so we reach you first time.

How much does a jump start cost?

A car jump start starts at £49, a van at £65, and a hybrid or EV 12V boost at £59. The price is confirmed before we set off and it does not change at night, at weekends, on bank holidays or inside the ULEZ and congestion charge zones. There is no call-out fee stacked on top and no mileage charge across the 33 boroughs. A battery health test starts at £25 on its own and is free with any jump start, and a new battery is from £95 fitted. You pay when the job is done, by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If we cannot start the car, we tell you why and you pay the callout only.

Do I need a membership?

No. Jump Start London is pay-as-you-go, so there is no membership, no annual fee, no joining cost and no sign-up before you can call. That is the main difference between us and a breakdown club: you are not paying a subscription all year for something you may use once. Call when you need us, get the price confirmed before we set off, and pay only for that job by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay when it is finished. There is no contract afterwards and nothing to cancel. If you already belong to a breakdown club you are still free to call us when their wait is longer than ours.

Can you get to a car in an underground or barrier car park?

Yes. Most London jump starts happen in car parks rather than on driveways, and a great many are underground residents' bays where nothing can get alongside you. Our technicians carry a compact lithium jump pack to the car on foot, so there is no need to bring a second vehicle in and no need for the bay next to you to be free. That is the practical reason a pack beats jump leads down there. Two things help before you go below ground. Agree the price and the time while you still have signal, and tell the concierge or car park office a technician is coming so they can point them to your level. Height barriers are not an obstacle.
