Flat batteries in Hackney

Where cars go flat here, and how we reach them.

Hackney's permit zones and low-traffic neighbourhoods mean plenty of cars only turn a wheel at the weekend. Most of the borough is split into 23 parking zones, A to Y, controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays, though zone B in North Shoreditch runs until midnight Monday to Saturday. We get flat batteries in the terraces off Stoke Newington Church Street and around London Fields all year, and a surge in the warehouse conversions of Hackney Wick after any cold snap. The council's car parks are small: Bentley Road in Dalston has 109 spaces with a four-hour limit, Hackney Marshes Centre on Homerton Road 184 with 2.1 metres of headroom, and Wilmer Place, Mabley Green, Spring Hill and Haggerston Park between 16 and 43 each. Homerton Hospital's front car park is short-stay only on weekday daytimes and opens to all visitors after 5pm and at weekends. Shoreditch and Hoxton callouts are mostly late at night, often from underground car parks beneath the newer flats.

Before you call: Estate car parks in Homerton and Clapton often have height barriers. Our technicians attend in a car, not a van, so barriers are not a problem, but tell us the block name so they find the right entrance. In a council car park, give us its name; several share the same postcode area.

Hackney questions

Before you call.

Can you reach Stamford Hill on a Saturday?

Yes. Saturday callouts in N16 are usually reached in 30 to 45 minutes and there is no weekend surcharge. Stamford Hill is densely parked with long terraced runs where nothing can pull up alongside a car, which is why our technician parks legally nearby and walks the pack to you instead. Give us the street name and the nearest cross street rather than only the postcode, because N16 covers a lot of similar-looking residential grid. The A10 Kingsland Road is the main approach from the south. Cover runs 24 hours a day across the borough, so an evening call is no different.

Do you cover the Westfield Stratford side of Hackney Wick?

Yes. Hackney Wick, Fish Island and the Olympic Park car parks are all covered. Give us the car park name and level, because the Park has several separate car parks serving different venues and they are far enough apart that the wrong one means a long walk. Hackney Wick and Fish Island are a mix of converted industrial units and new blocks where the unit or building name will find you much faster than a postcode. The A102 Eastway and A104 Lea Bridge Road are our approaches. On event days at the Park, tell us which side you are on and we route round the closures.

Can you reach the Hackney Marshes and Bentley Road car parks?

Yes. Hackney Marshes Centre car park on Homerton Road, E9 5PF, is the council's biggest, with 184 standard spaces plus disabled and coach bays and a 2.1 metre headroom limit at the entrance, and it fills with football traffic at weekends, so tell us which end you are parked at. Bentley Road in Dalston, N1 4BY, has 109 spaces, a four-hour maximum stay and a 2,540 kilogram weight limit, which is worth knowing if you drive a large van. The council's other car parks are small: Wilmer Place in Stoke Newington has 32 spaces, Mabley Green 43 with 2.4 metres of headroom, Spring Hill 25 and Haggerston Park on Yorkton Street 16. Give us the car park name rather than a postcode, because several sit in the same postcode area, and stay with the car.

Can you come to Homerton Hospital, and what changes on an Arsenal day in Hackney?

Yes. Homerton University Hospital on Homerton Row, E9 6SR, limits its front car park to 30-minute and one-hour short-stay bays between 8am and 5pm on weekdays, then opens it to all patients and visitors after 5pm, at weekends and on bank holidays, so an evening or weekend visitor's car that will not start is usually right there at the front; tell us the bay area and the nearest entrance. On Arsenal event days the controls in Hackney's zones G around Brownswood and Manor House, G2 in Finsbury Park and M in Clissold west of Milton Grove are extended to 8.30am to 8.30pm for weekday matches and noon to 4.30pm on Sundays and bank holidays, so if your car is on one of those streets, tell us the zone letter and whether it is in a permit bay.

How quickly can you reach me in London?

Across the 33 boroughs we arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of your call on average, and faster inside the North and South Circular. We give you a realistic time when you book rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you straight away if it will be longer. The hour makes no difference to the cover: we run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and bank holidays, so a three in the morning callout is handled exactly like a midday one. Traffic is the main variable, particularly the A406 North Circular, the A205 South Circular and the river crossings. If you are somewhere with restricted access, such as an airport car park, a gated development or an underground residents' bay, say so when you call so we reach you first time.

How much does a jump start cost?

A car jump start starts at £49, a van at £65, and a hybrid or EV 12V boost at £59. The price is confirmed before we set off and it does not change at night, at weekends, on bank holidays or inside the ULEZ and congestion charge zones. There is no call-out fee stacked on top and no mileage charge across the 33 boroughs. A battery health test starts at £25 on its own and is free with any jump start, and a new battery is from £95 fitted. You pay when the job is done, by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If we cannot start the car, we tell you why and you pay the callout only.

Do I need a membership?

No. Jump Start London is pay-as-you-go, so there is no membership, no annual fee, no joining cost and no sign-up before you can call. That is the main difference between us and a breakdown club: you are not paying a subscription all year for something you may use once. Call when you need us, get the price confirmed before we set off, and pay only for that job by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay when it is finished. There is no contract afterwards and nothing to cancel. If you already belong to a breakdown club you are still free to call us when their wait is longer than ours.

Can you get to a car in an underground or barrier car park?

Yes. Most London jump starts happen in car parks rather than on driveways, and a great many are underground residents' bays where nothing can get alongside you. Our technicians carry a compact lithium jump pack to the car on foot, so there is no need to bring a second vehicle in and no need for the bay next to you to be free. That is the practical reason a pack beats jump leads down there. Two things help before you go below ground. Agree the price and the time while you still have signal, and tell the concierge or car park office a technician is coming so they can point them to your level. Height barriers are not an obstacle.
