Flat batteries in Waltham Forest
Where cars go flat here, and how we reach them.
Walthamstow was the first borough to fill its residential streets with low-traffic filters, and the side effect is cars that only do very short trips and never charge. Leyton and Leytonstone are terraced permit streets with the same problem, while Chingford and Highams Park are driveway suburbs where a second car sits idle. Whipps Cross Hospital, with its entrance on the A114 between the Whipps Cross and Green Man roundabouts, has around 400 visitor spaces in car parks 1 to 4 plus a new 500-space multi-storey, and cars left there for a long visit are a regular callout. The 17&Central car park in Walthamstow is open 24 hours with a 1.93 metre height limit, the TfL station car parks at Chingford, Highams Park, Walthamstow Central and Leytonstone fill with commuters, and the A406 at Waterworks Corner is where the borough's roadside breakdowns happen.

Waltham Forest questions
Before you call.
Can you come to Whipps Cross Hospital car parks?
Yes. Staff and visitor car parks at Whipps Cross are covered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no night or weekend surcharge. Give us the car park and the level, and tell the security desk that a technician is coming so they can direct them rather than leaving them to work out the site. A hospital car park is a place where flat batteries surface, because a car can stand untouched through a full shift and any small drain has time to do its work. Every jump start includes a battery health test, so you know before driving home whether it will start again tomorrow.
Do you cover Chingford and the edge of Epping Forest?
Yes, all of E4 up to the borough edge, including the forest car parks off Rangers Road and Bury Road. Those car parks are unlit, empty early and sit off the same stretch of road with no numbering, so tell us which one and which entrance you used, and after dark keep the doors locked and the hazard lights on until the technician arrives. In Chingford itself the two easy spots are the TfL station car parks at Chingford and Highams Park and the council's Richmond Road car park, which is permanently open; Hall Lane closes at 8pm on weekdays and 4pm on Sunday, so say if you are in that one. The A406 at Waterworks Corner is the way the technician comes in from the south, and nothing is added to the price for the borough edge or the hour.
Do you cover the council car parks in Walthamstow, Leyton and Chingford?
Yes. Waltham Forest's council car parks at Bedford Road, Brandon Road, High Street, Mission Grove and Linford Road in E17, Stanley Road in E10, Church Lane in E11 and Richmond Road in E4 are permanently open, so a car that will not start there at midnight is still reachable. Hall Lane in E4 is the exception, open 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday, and the Town Hall car park on Forest Road only opens on weekday office hours, so call sooner rather than later if you are in either of those. Tell us the car park name and the bay area, and if you are at 17&Central say so: it is a barrierless ANPR car park with no ticket to worry about while the technician works.
Can you get to Chingford, Highams Park or Leytonstone station car parks?
Yes. TfL station car parks in the borough are at Chingford, Highams Park, Walthamstow Central and Leytonstone, all run by Saba, and all are surface car parks that the technician can drive straight into. Chingford and Highams Park are the classic case: the car goes in at seven in the morning, comes out at seven at night, and does that five days a week with a fifteen-minute drive at each end, which is not enough to put back what a cold start takes out. When you call, give us the station, the entrance you used and where in the car park you are, and stay with the car. If the car is a hybrid, mention it; the 12V battery is jumped the same way but the connection points differ.
How quickly can you reach me in London?
Across the 33 boroughs we arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of your call on average, and faster inside the North and South Circular. We give you a realistic time when you book rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you straight away if it will be longer. The hour makes no difference to the cover: we run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and bank holidays, so a three in the morning callout is handled exactly like a midday one. Traffic is the main variable, particularly the A406 North Circular, the A205 South Circular and the river crossings. If you are somewhere with restricted access, such as an airport car park, a gated development or an underground residents' bay, say so when you call so we reach you first time.
How much does a jump start cost?
A car jump start starts at £49, a van at £65, and a hybrid or EV 12V boost at £59. The price is confirmed before we set off and it does not change at night, at weekends, on bank holidays or inside the ULEZ and congestion charge zones. There is no call-out fee stacked on top and no mileage charge across the 33 boroughs. A battery health test starts at £25 on its own and is free with any jump start, and a new battery is from £95 fitted. You pay when the job is done, by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If we cannot start the car, we tell you why and you pay the callout only.
Do I need a membership?
No. Jump Start London is pay-as-you-go, so there is no membership, no annual fee, no joining cost and no sign-up before you can call. That is the main difference between us and a breakdown club: you are not paying a subscription all year for something you may use once. Call when you need us, get the price confirmed before we set off, and pay only for that job by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay when it is finished. There is no contract afterwards and nothing to cancel. If you already belong to a breakdown club you are still free to call us when their wait is longer than ours.
Can you get to a car in an underground or barrier car park?
Yes. Most London jump starts happen in car parks rather than on driveways, and a great many are underground residents' bays where nothing can get alongside you. Our technicians carry a compact lithium jump pack to the car on foot, so there is no need to bring a second vehicle in and no need for the bay next to you to be free. That is the practical reason a pack beats jump leads down there. Two things help before you go below ground. Agree the price and the time while you still have signal, and tell the concierge or car park office a technician is coming so they can point them to your level. Height barriers are not an obstacle.
