Flat batteries in Kensington & Chelsea
Where cars go flat here, and how we reach them.
This borough has more garaged and mews-parked cars than anywhere else in London, and a car in a mews garage that is only used for the school run or a monthly trip to the country is the classic flat-battery case. There are no uncontrolled parking areas anywhere in Kensington and Chelsea and the council issues no visitor vouchers, so during controlled hours a visiting car is either in a pay-by-phone bay or in a car park: the Town Hall car park under Hornton Street is open 24 hours and run by Saba, Holland Park has a small pay-by-phone car park off Abbotsbury Road, and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on the Fulham Road has an underground public car park entered from Nightingale Place with a 1.9 metre height limit. Earl's Court and Notting Hill run on residents' permits, and the North Kensington estates have communal car parks. The borough has been outside the congestion charge zone since the western extension was removed in January 2011.

Kensington & Chelsea questions
Before you call.
Can you jump start a car in a private garage or mews?
Yes. A great many of our callouts in this borough are in mews garages and underground residents' car parks, so it is the normal case rather than the awkward one. The jump pack is carried in on foot, which means the car does not need to come out of the garage first and no second vehicle needs to reach it. Give us the mews name or the building and the level, because postcodes here cover a lot of ground and mews entrances are easy to miss from the main road. If the garage door is electric and will not open because the battery is flat, say so on the call.
Do you attend high-end cars such as Range Rover, Bentley or Porsche?
Yes. We use regulated lithium jump packs with surge and reverse-polarity protection and follow the correct connection point for each make, which matters more on these cars than most. Many have the battery in the boot or under a seat rather than the engine bay, and several need a designated jump point instead of a direct terminal connection. Getting that wrong is how electrical faults get introduced, which is also why we never use basic jump leads off another car. The battery health test that comes with every jump start is worth having here too, since a car used infrequently often has a battery that will not hold charge.
Can you get into the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital car park?
Yes. Chelsea and Westminster Hospital at 369 Fulham Road, SW10 9NH, has an underground public car park entered from Nightingale Place; you take a ticket at the barrier on the way in and pay at the machines in the hospital basement before leaving, and there is a 1.9 metre height limit at the entrance, which is no problem for us because the technician carries the pack in on foot. Because it is underground, your phone will struggle, so agree the price and the arrival time with us before you go back down, then tell us the level, the bay and the nearest lift lobby. If the car has been sitting there through a long visit with the lights or the hazard flashers on, say so; it usually means a drained battery rather than a failed one.
Where can a visiting car legally stop in Kensington and Chelsea while you work?
Almost anywhere for the few minutes it takes, because the technician pulls up beside your car rather than parking for the day. The borough is worth understanding though: there are no uncontrolled streets in Kensington and Chelsea, the council issues no visitor vouchers, and in controlled hours a visitor's car must be in a pay-by-phone bay or off the street. The main public car parks are the Town Hall car park under Hornton Street, W8 7NX, open 24 hours and managed by Saba with the council's Parking Shop on level B2, and the pay-by-phone car park in Holland Park just off Abbotsbury Road, which also has disabled bays. If your car has died in a pay bay, tell us the street and bay so the technician can find you before the session runs out.
How quickly can you reach me in London?
Across the 33 boroughs we arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of your call on average, and faster inside the North and South Circular. We give you a realistic time when you book rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you straight away if it will be longer. The hour makes no difference to the cover: we run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and bank holidays, so a three in the morning callout is handled exactly like a midday one. Traffic is the main variable, particularly the A406 North Circular, the A205 South Circular and the river crossings. If you are somewhere with restricted access, such as an airport car park, a gated development or an underground residents' bay, say so when you call so we reach you first time.
How much does a jump start cost?
A car jump start starts at £49, a van at £65, and a hybrid or EV 12V boost at £59. The price is confirmed before we set off and it does not change at night, at weekends, on bank holidays or inside the ULEZ and congestion charge zones. There is no call-out fee stacked on top and no mileage charge across the 33 boroughs. A battery health test starts at £25 on its own and is free with any jump start, and a new battery is from £95 fitted. You pay when the job is done, by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If we cannot start the car, we tell you why and you pay the callout only.
Do I need a membership?
No. Jump Start London is pay-as-you-go, so there is no membership, no annual fee, no joining cost and no sign-up before you can call. That is the main difference between us and a breakdown club: you are not paying a subscription all year for something you may use once. Call when you need us, get the price confirmed before we set off, and pay only for that job by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay when it is finished. There is no contract afterwards and nothing to cancel. If you already belong to a breakdown club you are still free to call us when their wait is longer than ours.
Can you get to a car in an underground or barrier car park?
Yes. Most London jump starts happen in car parks rather than on driveways, and a great many are underground residents' bays where nothing can get alongside you. Our technicians carry a compact lithium jump pack to the car on foot, so there is no need to bring a second vehicle in and no need for the bay next to you to be free. That is the practical reason a pack beats jump leads down there. Two things help before you go below ground. Agree the price and the time while you still have signal, and tell the concierge or car park office a technician is coming so they can point them to your level. Height barriers are not an obstacle.
