Flat batteries in Lambeth
Where cars go flat here, and how we reach them.
Lambeth's flat batteries follow the A23 south from Brixton to Streatham, where long terraced streets full of permit bays mean cars are driven rarely and always for short trips; the borough's twenty controlled zones sit mainly in the north. Nine Elms and Vauxhall add hundreds of new underground car parks under the towers, and a car left in one for a month comes back dead. Waterloo and the South Bank bring in evening callouts: St Thomas' Hospital's car park on Westminster Bridge Road is open 24 hours behind a barrier, and Waterloo station's APCOA car park on Station Approach has just twenty spaces, half of them EV bays. King's College Hospital on Denmark Hill has no general parking, only drop-off bays on Bessemer Road and about twenty blue-badge spaces. The council's own car parks are Popes Road in Brixton, Leigham Court Road in Streatham and Waylett Place in West Norwood. Waterloo, the South Bank and Kennington north of Kennington Lane are inside the congestion charge zone; Vauxhall station, Brixton, Clapham and Streatham are outside.

Lambeth questions
Before you call.
Do you cover the Nine Elms and Vauxhall tower car parks?
Yes. Tell us the building name and the car park level, because Nine Elms and Vauxhall are a cluster of towers that share postcodes and each has its own underground car park with a separate entrance. Concierge desks across the development are used to letting technicians in, so let them know someone is coming and the last stretch takes care of itself. Agree the price before you go down, since signal drops underground. The technician carries the pack in on foot, so there is no need for a second vehicle to reach your bay or for the space alongside you to be clear.
Can you reach Streatham and West Norwood at night?
Yes. Night callouts in SW16 and SE27 are usually reached in 30 to 45 minutes and there is no night surcharge, so the price does not move because of the hour. Streatham and West Norwood run along the A23 Streatham High Road, which gives us a fast route in from both ends even late at night. The residential streets either side are tightly parked, so the technician parks legally nearby and walks the pack to your car. Give us the street and the nearest cross street rather than only the postcode, because SW16 stretches a long way along that corridor.
Can you come to the St Thomas' Hospital car park at Waterloo?
Yes. St Thomas' car park on Westminster Bridge Road, SE1 7EH, is open 24 hours with barrier entry, allows up to twenty minutes free inside the barriers for drop-off, and takes payment by cash or card at the machines before you leave, so a car that dies during a long visit is not trapped and the technician can walk the pack in past the barrier at any hour. Tell us the level and the nearest lift or entrance, because the site is large and the wings look alike from the car park. If you have parked at Waterloo station instead, its APCOA car park on Station Approach, SE1 8SW, has only twenty spaces including ten EV charging bays and is open 24 hours; give us the bay number. Both sit inside the congestion charge zone, which changes nothing about our price.
Which Lambeth council car parks do you cover, and what are their hours?
All three. Popes Road in Brixton, SW9 8PQ, has a four-hour maximum stay and opens 8.30am to 7.30pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 5pm on Sunday. Leigham Court Road in Streatham, SW16 2PJ, and Waylett Place in West Norwood, SE27 9AE, both open 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday with a three-hour maximum and are free on Sundays. Because all three close in the evening, a car that will not start at ten to seven needs us quickly, so call as soon as you know and give us the car park name rather than a postcode. King's College Hospital on Denmark Hill is different: it has no general parking, only drop-off and collection bays on Bessemer Road near the Hambleden Wing and around twenty blue-badge spaces with a four-hour limit, so a visitor's car there is usually on a nearby street.
How quickly can you reach me in London?
Across the 33 boroughs we arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of your call on average, and faster inside the North and South Circular. We give you a realistic time when you book rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you straight away if it will be longer. The hour makes no difference to the cover: we run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and bank holidays, so a three in the morning callout is handled exactly like a midday one. Traffic is the main variable, particularly the A406 North Circular, the A205 South Circular and the river crossings. If you are somewhere with restricted access, such as an airport car park, a gated development or an underground residents' bay, say so when you call so we reach you first time.
How much does a jump start cost?
A car jump start starts at £49, a van at £65, and a hybrid or EV 12V boost at £59. The price is confirmed before we set off and it does not change at night, at weekends, on bank holidays or inside the ULEZ and congestion charge zones. There is no call-out fee stacked on top and no mileage charge across the 33 boroughs. A battery health test starts at £25 on its own and is free with any jump start, and a new battery is from £95 fitted. You pay when the job is done, by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If we cannot start the car, we tell you why and you pay the callout only.
Do I need a membership?
No. Jump Start London is pay-as-you-go, so there is no membership, no annual fee, no joining cost and no sign-up before you can call. That is the main difference between us and a breakdown club: you are not paying a subscription all year for something you may use once. Call when you need us, get the price confirmed before we set off, and pay only for that job by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay when it is finished. There is no contract afterwards and nothing to cancel. If you already belong to a breakdown club you are still free to call us when their wait is longer than ours.
Can you get to a car in an underground or barrier car park?
Yes. Most London jump starts happen in car parks rather than on driveways, and a great many are underground residents' bays where nothing can get alongside you. Our technicians carry a compact lithium jump pack to the car on foot, so there is no need to bring a second vehicle in and no need for the bay next to you to be free. That is the practical reason a pack beats jump leads down there. Two things help before you go below ground. Agree the price and the time while you still have signal, and tell the concierge or car park office a technician is coming so they can point them to your level. Height barriers are not an obstacle.
