Flat batteries in Southwark

Where cars go flat here, and how we reach them.

Southwark runs from the riverside car parks at London Bridge and Bankside to the leafy permit streets of Dulwich, and the callouts vary just as much. Thirty-one controlled parking zones cover about 60 per cent of the borough, most of them weekday-only, but Bankside's zone C1 is controlled every day from 8am to 11pm. Borough, Bankside and Elephant and Castle north of New Kent Road are inside the congestion charge zone, and Guy's Hospital on Great Maze Pond has only blue-badge parking, entered from Crosby Row. Q-Park Tower Bridge on Gainsford Street has 502 spaces with a 1.95 metre height limit and is open 24 hours, just outside the zone. Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays have large estate car parks where cars are left for weeks, and the Surrey Quays shopping centre car park has 650 spaces with three hours free; Peckham and Camberwell have busy terraced streets with few driveways and two small council car parks at Choumert Grove and Cerise Road, and Dulwich has plenty of older cars that only move on a Saturday. The Old Kent Road retail parks are a common evening callout.

Before you call: Tell us if you are in a Surrey Quays or Rotherhithe estate car park; several share a postcode and the block name gets the technician to the right gate first time. At Surrey Quays shopping centre, say which entrance to Redriff Road you used; the car park is large and the three-hour free limit does not stop for a flat battery.

Southwark questions

Before you call.

Can you come to the Bankside or London Bridge car parks after a show?

Yes. The Bankside, Tate Modern and London Bridge station car parks are covered 24 hours a day, which is the point after a late show when the surrounding streets have emptied. Give us the car park name and level. These are underground sites where signal drops, so agree the price and the arrival time before you head down. London Bridge in particular has separate sections sharing one postcode, so the level matters. The A3 Borough High Street and A200 Jamaica Road are our approaches. There is no evening or weekend surcharge, so a post-theatre callout costs the same as a weekday morning one.

Do you cover Dulwich Village and Herne Hill?

Yes. All of Dulwich, Herne Hill and Nunhead is covered, usually within 30 to 45 minutes, across SE21, SE22 and SE24. These are quiet residential streets with a lot of permit parking and some steep sections around Sydenham Hill and Denmark Hill, so tell us the street and the nearest junction. If your car is nose-in on a slope, mention it, because the technician chocks the wheel before connecting the pack, which is simply how it should be done on a gradient. The A2199 Rye Lane and A205 South Circular are the routes across. Cover runs 24 hours a day with no weekend surcharge.

Can you get into Q-Park Tower Bridge and the Surrey Quays car park?

Yes. Q-Park Tower Bridge on Gainsford Street, SE1 2NE, is a multi-storey with 502 spaces, nine disabled bays and a 1.95 metre height limit, open 24 hours and sitting just outside the congestion charge boundary at Tower Bridge Road; the technician comes in on foot with the pack, so the barrier and the height limit are not an issue, but signal fades on the lower levels, so agree the price and time before you go back down. Surrey Quays Shopping Centre on Redriff Road, SE16 7LL, has 650 spaces including disabled and parent-and-child bays, free for up to three hours with no return within two, and it is a big open site, so tell us the entrance and the nearest store. In both, stay with the car so the technician can find you.

Which parts of Southwark are inside the congestion charge zone, and does Guy's have parking?

Borough, Bankside, the Southwark and Waterloo side of SE1, Elephant and Castle north of New Kent Road and the part of Bermondsey west of Tower Bridge Road are inside the zone; Peckham, Camberwell, Dulwich, Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays are outside. It makes no difference to our price. Guy's Hospital on Great Maze Pond, SE1 9RT, sits inside both the congestion charge zone and the ULEZ and has only limited blue-badge parking, entered from Crosby Row, so a visitor's car that will not start is usually in a street pay bay or in a car park nearby. Southwark's own pay car parks are both in Peckham, Choumert Grove with room for about 120 cars and the Cerise Road town centre car park with about 50, open 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday.

How quickly can you reach me in London?

Across the 33 boroughs we arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of your call on average, and faster inside the North and South Circular. We give you a realistic time when you book rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you straight away if it will be longer. The hour makes no difference to the cover: we run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and bank holidays, so a three in the morning callout is handled exactly like a midday one. Traffic is the main variable, particularly the A406 North Circular, the A205 South Circular and the river crossings. If you are somewhere with restricted access, such as an airport car park, a gated development or an underground residents' bay, say so when you call so we reach you first time.

How much does a jump start cost?

A car jump start starts at £49, a van at £65, and a hybrid or EV 12V boost at £59. The price is confirmed before we set off and it does not change at night, at weekends, on bank holidays or inside the ULEZ and congestion charge zones. There is no call-out fee stacked on top and no mileage charge across the 33 boroughs. A battery health test starts at £25 on its own and is free with any jump start, and a new battery is from £95 fitted. You pay when the job is done, by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If we cannot start the car, we tell you why and you pay the callout only.

Do I need a membership?

No. Jump Start London is pay-as-you-go, so there is no membership, no annual fee, no joining cost and no sign-up before you can call. That is the main difference between us and a breakdown club: you are not paying a subscription all year for something you may use once. Call when you need us, get the price confirmed before we set off, and pay only for that job by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay when it is finished. There is no contract afterwards and nothing to cancel. If you already belong to a breakdown club you are still free to call us when their wait is longer than ours.

Can you get to a car in an underground or barrier car park?

Yes. Most London jump starts happen in car parks rather than on driveways, and a great many are underground residents' bays where nothing can get alongside you. Our technicians carry a compact lithium jump pack to the car on foot, so there is no need to bring a second vehicle in and no need for the bay next to you to be free. That is the practical reason a pack beats jump leads down there. Two things help before you go below ground. Agree the price and the time while you still have signal, and tell the concierge or car park office a technician is coming so they can point them to your level. Height barriers are not an obstacle.
