Flat batteries in Richmond upon Thames

Where cars go flat here, and how we reach them.

Richmond's callouts are second cars: a family in Barnes, Kew or East Sheen with one car that does the commute and another that sits for a fortnight, and it is the second one that goes flat in November. Richmond Park's seven car parks, Pembroke Lodge, Kingston Gate, Broomfield Hill, Robin Hood Gate, Roehampton Gate, Sheen Gate and Pen Ponds, and Bushy Park's four catch weekend walkers, and both parks lock their vehicle gates at dusk. In the town centres the council's Paradise Road multi-storey in Richmond has 337 bays and Arragon Road in Twickenham 437, both with a 1.9 metre height limit, while Old Deer Park is a 285-bay surface car park. Twickenham on a rugby day fills every side street with cars that have not moved for six hours. The A316, the A310 London Road and the Chiswick roundabout end of the South Circular are where breakdowns on the move happen.

Before you call: Richmond Park's vehicle gates open at 7.30am, 7am in summer, and close at dusk, and Bushy Park's close at dusk too. If your car is inside either park, call us straight away so the technician can reach you before the gates shut, and tell us which of the named car parks you are in.

Richmond upon Thames questions

Before you call.

Do you come out on Twickenham rugby days?

Yes. The roads around the stadium close for a few hours before and after a match, so tell us the street and which side of the ground you are on, and we route the technician to whichever approach is still open. On a rugby day that detail matters more than the postcode, since coming in from the wrong side can add twenty minutes. The A316 Chertsey Road is the main route and is usually the one affected, so side streets often become the better way in. There is no event surcharge, and cover runs 24 hours a day for cars that fail after an evening fixture.

Can you attend Richmond Park and Bushy Park car parks?

Yes, both parks are covered. Tell us the gate or car park name, because each park has several gates serving separate car parks and the distance between them is considerable on foot. The important thing is the closing time: both parks lock their gates, and Richmond Park closes at dusk for vehicles. If your car is inside and the light is going, call straight away rather than waiting to see whether it will start, because once a gate is locked the job becomes a conversation with the park staff instead of a quick visit. The A305 Richmond Road and A307 Kew Road are our approaches.

Can you get into the Paradise Road and Arragon Road multi-storeys?

Yes. Paradise Road in Richmond, TW9 1SQ, is the council's multi-storey with 337 car bays and four disabled bays, open 7.30am to midnight every day, and Arragon Road in Twickenham, TW1 3NG, has 437 bays and opens 7am to midnight Monday to Saturday and 9.30am to 6pm on Sunday. Both have a 6ft 4in, or 1.9 metre, height limit at the entrance, which is why our technicians attend in a car with the jump pack in the boot rather than a van. Old Deer Park, TW9 2RA, is a surface car park with 285 bays and shorter hours, 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 5pm on Sundays and bank holidays. Give us the car park, the level and the nearest stairwell, and call before closing time.

What happens in Twickenham's event zone on a big rugby day?

On Twickenham Stadium event days with crowds over 30,000 the council switches on the Twickenham Event Zone, known as Zone R, a one-day controlled parking zone that runs from 11am to 11pm, and parking illegally inside it in those hours can mean a penalty charge. If your car has died on a street inside the zone, tell us the street and the nearest house number and whether you are in a permit bay, because our technician stops beside the car for the few minutes the jump takes and does not need a bay of their own. The crowds leaving on foot slow the roads around the ground for an hour after the final whistle, so if you can, tell us which side of the A316 you are on and which end of the street is open.

How quickly can you reach me in London?

Across the 33 boroughs we arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of your call on average, and faster inside the North and South Circular. We give you a realistic time when you book rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you straight away if it will be longer. The hour makes no difference to the cover: we run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and bank holidays, so a three in the morning callout is handled exactly like a midday one. Traffic is the main variable, particularly the A406 North Circular, the A205 South Circular and the river crossings. If you are somewhere with restricted access, such as an airport car park, a gated development or an underground residents' bay, say so when you call so we reach you first time.

How much does a jump start cost?

A car jump start starts at £49, a van at £65, and a hybrid or EV 12V boost at £59. The price is confirmed before we set off and it does not change at night, at weekends, on bank holidays or inside the ULEZ and congestion charge zones. There is no call-out fee stacked on top and no mileage charge across the 33 boroughs. A battery health test starts at £25 on its own and is free with any jump start, and a new battery is from £95 fitted. You pay when the job is done, by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If we cannot start the car, we tell you why and you pay the callout only.

Do I need a membership?

No. Jump Start London is pay-as-you-go, so there is no membership, no annual fee, no joining cost and no sign-up before you can call. That is the main difference between us and a breakdown club: you are not paying a subscription all year for something you may use once. Call when you need us, get the price confirmed before we set off, and pay only for that job by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay when it is finished. There is no contract afterwards and nothing to cancel. If you already belong to a breakdown club you are still free to call us when their wait is longer than ours.

Can you get to a car in an underground or barrier car park?

Yes. Most London jump starts happen in car parks rather than on driveways, and a great many are underground residents' bays where nothing can get alongside you. Our technicians carry a compact lithium jump pack to the car on foot, so there is no need to bring a second vehicle in and no need for the bay next to you to be free. That is the practical reason a pack beats jump leads down there. Two things help before you go below ground. Agree the price and the time while you still have signal, and tell the concierge or car park office a technician is coming so they can point them to your level. Height barriers are not an obstacle.
