Flat batteries in Ealing

Where cars go flat here, and how we reach them.

The A40 through Ealing is one of the busiest roadside breakdown stretches in London, the Hanger Lane gyratory, where the A406 North Circular meets the A40, is its worst junction, and Park Royal's industrial estates are where van batteries go flat at the start of a shift. Ealing Broadway and Acton are permit-parked terraces with plenty of cars that only move at the weekend; the Central Ealing zone around Ealing Green, The Grove and Oxford Road is controlled until 7.30pm on weekdays, 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 4pm on Sundays. The Ealing Broadway Shopping car park, entered from Grove Road opposite Ealing Green with more than 600 spaces on weekdays and 800 at weekends, is the busy retail callout, while Greenford, Northolt and Perivale are driveway suburbs with TfL station car parks at Greenford, Perivale and North Ealing. Ealing Hospital on the Uxbridge Road in Southall adds cars left all day with something switched on.

Before you call: Park Royal estates share a handful of postcodes. Give us the unit number and the road, not just the postcode, so the technician finds the right yard. Most Ealing council car parks have 1.98 metre height restrictors at the entrance, which is why our technicians attend in a car rather than a van.

Ealing questions

Before you call.

Do you attend vans in Park Royal and Greenford industrial estates?

Yes. Van jump starts across Park Royal, Greenford and Northolt are a common early-morning callout, from £65 with no surcharge for the hour. Industrial estates need different details from a residential street: give us the company name and the unit number rather than the postcode, because one postcode often covers a whole run of yards and the technician will otherwise be reading signage at six in the morning. If the gates are not open yet, or there is a barrier and a security desk, tell us on the call so access can be arranged rather than the technician arriving at a locked yard.

Can you reach me on the A40 or the A406 at Hanger Lane?

Yes. Hanger Lane is the gyratory where the A406 North Circular meets the A40 Western Avenue, and the A406 then runs south from it to the A404 Harrow Road junction; from a stopped car the exits all look the same, so before you call get to a lay-by, a slip road or behind the barrier and ring 999 if you are in a live lane. Then tell us which road you were on, the direction, and whether you are on the gyratory itself, the A40 underpass beneath it or one of the slips, because approaching from the wrong arm costs real time here. There is no postcode that places you on either road. Nothing is added to the price for the road, the hour or the mileage.

Can you reach the Ealing Broadway Shopping car park and the Central Ealing permit streets?

Yes. The Ealing Broadway Shopping car park is entered from Grove Road via St Mary's Road, opposite Ealing Green, and is open from 6am to midnight with more than 600 spaces on weekdays and over 800 at weekends; it is cashless, so there is no ticket to worry about while the technician works. The streets around it, Ealing Green, The Grove, Oxford Road and Hamilton Road, sit in the council's Zone A Central Ealing controlled parking zone, which runs 8.30am to 7.30pm Monday to Thursday, 8.30am to 11pm on Friday and Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday, so a Saturday-night callout there is still inside zone hours. Give us the level in the car park or the street and house number outside it, and stay with the car.

Do you cover Ealing Hospital and the Greenford and Perivale station car parks?

Yes. Ealing Hospital is on the Uxbridge Road in Southall, UB1 3HW; its visitor car parks are signposted from the entrance with a 10mph limit inside, and blue-badge holders park free for up to six hours in the marked bays. Tell us which car park and the nearest building, because the site is long and thin along the main road. Greenford, Perivale and North Ealing all have TfL station car parks run by Saba, open-air and easy for the technician to drive into, and they are the typical short-hop commuter case: ten minutes to the station, ten hours standing, ten minutes home, which never puts back what a winter start takes out. Give us the station and where in the car park you are, and keep your phone on.

How quickly can you reach me in London?

Across the 33 boroughs we arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of your call on average, and faster inside the North and South Circular. We give you a realistic time when you book rather than an optimistic one, and we tell you straight away if it will be longer. The hour makes no difference to the cover: we run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and bank holidays, so a three in the morning callout is handled exactly like a midday one. Traffic is the main variable, particularly the A406 North Circular, the A205 South Circular and the river crossings. If you are somewhere with restricted access, such as an airport car park, a gated development or an underground residents' bay, say so when you call so we reach you first time.

How much does a jump start cost?

A car jump start starts at £49, a van at £65, and a hybrid or EV 12V boost at £59. The price is confirmed before we set off and it does not change at night, at weekends, on bank holidays or inside the ULEZ and congestion charge zones. There is no call-out fee stacked on top and no mileage charge across the 33 boroughs. A battery health test starts at £25 on its own and is free with any jump start, and a new battery is from £95 fitted. You pay when the job is done, by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If we cannot start the car, we tell you why and you pay the callout only.

Do I need a membership?

No. Jump Start London is pay-as-you-go, so there is no membership, no annual fee, no joining cost and no sign-up before you can call. That is the main difference between us and a breakdown club: you are not paying a subscription all year for something you may use once. Call when you need us, get the price confirmed before we set off, and pay only for that job by card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay when it is finished. There is no contract afterwards and nothing to cancel. If you already belong to a breakdown club you are still free to call us when their wait is longer than ours.

Can you get to a car in an underground or barrier car park?

Yes. Most London jump starts happen in car parks rather than on driveways, and a great many are underground residents' bays where nothing can get alongside you. Our technicians carry a compact lithium jump pack to the car on foot, so there is no need to bring a second vehicle in and no need for the bay next to you to be free. That is the practical reason a pack beats jump leads down there. Two things help before you go below ground. Agree the price and the time while you still have signal, and tell the concierge or car park office a technician is coming so they can point them to your level. Height barriers are not an obstacle.
